Ken asks…
Can you use a dremel rotary tool to do scroll saw projects?
I bought a craftsmen scroll saw and returned 2 of them because of loud knocking it was making. To by a better scroll saw I would have to throw away 500 to 1000 dollars. When I had the scroll saw I love doing things with it while it worked. Is there a way I can use a dremel tool for this kind of work? If so what bits would I have to use and what are the downfalls from doing this this way?

I had the Roto-zip and found it was great for doing sheetrock and other things that didn’t really have to be perfect. The torque on those things cause them to take off in any direction when they hit a hard grain and the round (drill bit type) blade means you can’t do inside corners without leaving a small curve. If your going to do scroll work the rotary tools would help get the heavy stuff cut out but it is not a replacement for a scroll saw.

Wayne asks…
Should I use a Dremel rotary tool for all-purpose crafting/cutting or something else?
I am looking for an all purpose power tool for projects with thin wood/cardboard/plastic and all around usefulness around the house. I don’t want to buy a million power tools due to space (1 bedroom apartment) and money. I know that a dremel rotary tool has many uses and attachments, but can it drill holes for bolts? Also I don’t think it will cut a straight line well when trimming wood but not sure. Any ideas anyone???? Thanks for the help!!

The Dremel is a great tool for grinding sanding and polishing, it will drill only very small holes it will cut wood but not always really straight. It is probably the most versatile of craft tools but there is another type of tool that has become pretty popular, they call it an electric Multi Tool, in fact dremel even makes one.
Thanks

Mandy asks…
Dremel tool: woodcarving. I am interested in starting a woodcarving hobby.?
I am not sure if I want to use a dremel tool, or hand tools. Do you have a reccommendation? Is there a book that offers step by step plans for dremel projects? Can I do everything with the basic dremel kit, or do I need to buy more?

My husband carved pictures with hand tools for a long time. They came out really nice. Then he got himself a dremel tool and started using it. He said that it is so much easier to handle. I even carved a few pictures on the wood myself and was able to control it. You should get what is called a flex shaft to put on the end of the tool so the heavy part can be hung on a rod of some sort, and use the shaft like a pencil. What you can do to is get yourself a slab of wood, draw or trace a picture on it then use the tool to carve. It will take a little time to control the carving and following the patterns, but with practice it will become easy. Good luck and have fun.
